In its season opener, MBE showcases First Baptist Arlington's 46-rank, 2949-pipe Frazee organ, built in 1926. Both abounding in natural projection and diverse timbral palettes, brass and organ match for brilliant, extroverted displays of musical exclamation. New England Conservatory's Dr. Thomas Handel joins MBE at the organ for energetic Baroque and Romantic compositions, such as Handel's Royal Fireworks and Watermusic, and Strauss's Ein Heldenleben Battle scene, for which the organ will cover string and woodwind parts. The party music of their day, Handel, Mouret, Charpentier, and Clarke's marches and dance movements inspired their listeners to come to their feet in celebration. Two hundred years later, Richard Strauss and the high romantics filled space and time with compositions inspired from philosophy and literature to move music to lowest depths and highest peaks.
